Governorship candidates of the Labour Party LP and the All Progressives Congress APC in Taraba state have kicked against the state house of assembly approving N5.5 billion loan for Governor Darius Ishaku for the completion of roads in the state.

According to Sen. Danlami Ikenya, the gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party in Taraba state, Ishaku cannot pay the N5.5 billion in the next seven months of his regime and should not be allowed to add to the debt he has already gathered on the state.

Also responding to the development, the gubernatorial candidate of the APC and Senator representing Taraba South, Sen. Emmanuel Bwacha, accused the governor of mortgaging the state through loans during his seven years as governor.

Both LP and APC guber candidates said no serious commercial bank would give such loans to an administration that is about to leave office in the next few months without the capacity to pay back.

“The money is not being borrowed for any meaningful project, but to be embezzled. What project is the government ready to do in the remaining seven months? For some of us, we believe any commercial bank that issues such funds is doing it on its own risk”, the candidates stated.

Recall the Taraba State House of Assembly on Wednesday approved a loan of N5.5 billion from the United Bank of Africa UBA to use for the completion of roads in the three senatorial zones of the state.

Dr Dawood Jeduwa, member representing Gembu at the state house of assembly, while speaking with journalists on the approval of the loan, said it was approved to enable the governor complete the ongoing road projects in the state.

Jeduwa said that even though the roads were captured in the 2021 appropriation budget, it has become necessary for the state to take the loan following the Dollar rise and the rise of construction materials in the markets different from what was projected in the budget.

The lawmaker mentioned the ongoing roads to include: Maraba to Abong, Maraba to Yoro and Yerima to Gasol roads network.

He said government is a continuum and that even if Governor Ishaku could not pay the loan, his successor in 2023 would pay at the appointed time.
